Scottish Borders Council - Promoting Scottish Timber in Construction
(Completed while at Gaia Architects)
Working with Bernard Planterose at North Woods Construction Ltd the aim of this LEADER-funded project was to promote the use of homegrown timber in construction in the Scottish Borders.
A series of sub-projects were developed to help achieve this, including:
•working with local sawmills to extend their range of homegrown products;
•introducing innovative and cost-effective timber jointing methods for timber post and beam builders;
•taking planners, local councillors and building control officers (the folk who say yae or nae to a lot of projects!) on two separate study tours of attractive, innovative timber buildings in the Scottish Borders;
•developing a standard range of homegrown timber cladding profiles and costs with a local sawmiller, and
•writing Scotland’s first Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) to specifically endorse the use of homegrown timber in construction.
