Alterations to a Victorian villa,

Edinburgh

A project with three elements - kitchen refurbishment, bathroom reconfiguration and works to the rear Annex to reduce heat loss and improve useability. The insulating materials have been carefully selected to control - rather than block - moisture coming through the porous sandstone walls.

Proposals for the Annex include inserting a large, zinc-clad projecting window into the west-facing wall and mansard roof.

Downstairs this gives valuable additional space for a shower room, while upstairs a Study has been created with a large window overlooking the garden.

The house sits in the middle of a very conservative conservation area in Edinburgh, so achieving planning permission for what is a very modern addition was a good achievement.
