Extension,
Land, Sea & Islands Centre,
Arisaig
Owned and volunteer-run by Arisaig Community Trust, the Land, Sea & Islands Centre is a small heritage and visitor centre in the West Highland village of Arisaig, on the famous Road To The Isles. It is the only facility in the local area that promotes local goods and services.
The building was converted in 2000 from a blacksmiths, or ‘Smiddy’, dating from the mid-1800s into a heritage centre.
Sam Foster Architects worked with the Trust to develop community-led proposals for the refurbishment and extension of the building.
Thanks to a Climate Challenge Fund grant the building was made much more energy efficient during the first half of 2015, and planning permission secured - without a single objection - for a sympathetic contemporary extension. While the refurbishment has helped reduce the running costs for the Community Trust, the extension will allow them to increase the range of local goods and services it can promote, as well as creating much-needed exhibition and storage space.
